ELDRO® is going digital: high-tech built on tradition

70 years of experience, more than 2 million devices installed, 100 per cent secure. ELDRO® and ELHY® branded brake thrusters, manufactured by EMG in Wenden, Germany, ensure that harbour crane installations can be safely operated all over the world. The brake thrusters, which are “Made in Germany”, are used in large portal cranes and harbour crane installations to securely operate the brake systems. 

But even in harbours, increasing digitization marches onward. EMG Automation GmbH is reacting to this challenge – with ELDRO®dynamic and the expansion of the product line to include ELDRO®digital, it is launching a new range of equipment to the market which meets the requirements of the future with the latest mechanics and electronics. 

The new ELDRO® brake thrusters will be showcased for the first time at TOC Asia 2018 in Singapore, which is one of the largest trade fairs for technologies for harbours, ships and terminals in the world. “We have had many conversations that tell us that our new brake thrusters are arousing a great deal of interest in the industry”, commented Uwe Wurster, Head of the Drive Solutions business unit at EMG, eagerly anticipating the product launch.

With the new ELDRO®dynamic range and the expansion to include ELDRO®digital, EMG is offering a suitable solution for all requirements and demands. The new generation of ELDRO®dynamic brake thrusters is impressive for reasons including significantly shorter lifting and lowering times thanks to optimized and improved pump hydraulics. In addition, the power consumption is significantly lower than traditional electrohydraulic thrusters. This is also thanks to the use of a more energy-efficient IE3 motor. In addition to this, EMG has increased the hydraulic efficiency which means that the device's self-heating properties are significantly reduced. In addition, the internal and external geometry of the housing has been optimized to enable a maximum degree of convection to be achieved. ELDRO®dynamic can therefore be utilized in a much wider ambient temperature range than any other devices on the market.

Thanks to a number of optional available intelligent sensors, the brake lifting devices of the ELDRO®digital version are also suitable for connection to the condition monitoring systems. ELDRO®digital therefore offers stop position and residual travel monitoring sensors which can be quickly and retrospectively fitted and can be set up externally. Additional sensors monitor aspects such as inner pressure and temperature and can be linked to automation and monitoring systems via IO link-compatible sensors. In this way, the conditions in which the brake thrusters are used are continuously observed and permit predictive maintenance.

For decades, customers have valued the reliability and security of the previous ELDRO® range. For this reason, this product will continue to be marketed under the name ELDRO®classic. “Such a diverse range has never before been created, and with this new range we are offering a solution for every operating condition in a way that no other manufacturer does”, added Wurster. 

Progress built on tradition: the new generation of ELDRO® brake thrusters creates 100 per cent security and the highest level of availability for harbour installations by combining technical expertise gleaned over many decades along with the latest technology.
