EMG eMASS® - a stronghold of stability in every configuration

EMG eMASS® as a quasi-standard in the production of high-quality galvanised sheets

It's hard to believe that almost 15 years have passed since the EMG eMASS® electromagnetic strip stabilisation system was introduced into hot-dip coating lines. Today, EMG eMASS® is used as a "stand-alone system" or in combination with an existing air knive in more than 70 production lines worldwide. Since 2016, 11 further so-called "integrated solutions" have been added, in which the DUMA-BANDZINK JetPro nozzle technology and EMG eMASS® form a synergetic unit.

In the development period that lies behind us, important technology milestones were successively achieved and implemented in the application at galvanising lines. Among these, three milestones are particularly worth mentioning:

  1. The modular structure of the system: since 2017, EMG eMASS® has been available in the various configurations mentioned above, which can be optimally adapted to the respective plant conditions, installation requirements and customer objectives.   2. The continuous reduction and design optimisation of the various components (e.g. the magnet boxes): these measures were, among other things, a prerequisite for the development of the Integrated Solution and generally for positioning the magnet boxes as close as possible above the nozzle lips.
  3. The introduction of individually movable magnet actuators: These were also introduced for the first time with the Integrated Solution . Today, movable magnets are part of the standard repertoire of EMG eMASS® and make it possible to ensure the best stabilisation results over the full strip width at any strip position and width. In summary, EMG eMASS® is characterised by a high damping effect (>50 %) and a minimisation of the "crossbow". This makes it possible not only to produce uniform coatings and minimise production-related over-coating, but also to exploit the many advantages of a narrow operation of the nozzle lips with strip distances in individual cases even smaller than 7 mm.

The picture is a "mirror image" of these results, so to speak. It shows a perfect reflection on a strip in the coating plant at voestalpine Stahl during operation.   

Even the trained eye first has to orientate itself. A view of the strip that is otherwise often distorted by edge waves and vibrations turns out to be a vexing image here.

Conclusion: Today EMG eMASS® can be understood as a quasi-standard in the production of high-quality galvanised sheets. With 3 to 8 individually movable magnetic actuators, strip widths of less than 1 m up to a bit more than 2 m can be reliably covered. This allows in every system configuration the production of homogeneous coatings and a narrow nozzle operation. The integration into the production plant depends on the specific on-site conditions. When it comes to answering integration questions, the customer can meanwhile fall back on 15 years of integration and application know-how at EMG. EMG is also a solid partner in this respect and looks forward to new projects with you.
